LED Cove Lighting For Your Pre-War Home

Adding light to a pre-war home presents a particular challenge: how do you increase light levels while honoring the architectural character that makes these apartments so desirable in the first place?

In New York City pre-war construction, the concrete slab sits directly at ceiling level, leaving no cavity for recessed fixtures. Adding a dropped ceiling sacrifices at least five inches of height — one of the most valued assets of a pre-war apartment.

A Small Cove Around the Room

Cove lighting can resolve the tension. Mounted at the wall rather than the ceiling, a cove can be detailed to integrate with the room’s existing millwork — sitting quietly at the picture rail, belonging to the architecture rather than interrupting it. The light it produces is noticed, the cove itself is not.

This room with a Hudson River view receives supplementary light from an LED strip tucked into a new wood cove mounted over the pre-war picture rail. Fully concealed and positioned beyond the viewer’s line of sight, the strips reflect light off the ceiling, producing a diffuse, glare-free ambient glow that augments the room’s decorative lighting. Like the original hardwood floors and picture rail it sits above, the cove was designed to belong to the apartment’s history rather than compete with it.

Site-specific design guided this installation.

The windows overlooking the river — with their sweeping expanse of sky — were intentionally left without LEDs. This placement preserves your eye’s natural connection to depth, detail, and atmosphere of the darker scene beyond.

We maintained our clients’ connection to the night sky and the rhythm of river traffic. The warmth of a beautifully lit interior and the expansive calm of the Hudson coexist — both present, both enjoyed.
